Virginias Vintage Hire started in 2012, with our first hire of gorgeous old wooden chairs, our Ludlow chairs, still one of our favourite hire items. Beautifully worn and very rustic, with old paint colours, ranging from faded blues, chipped and crackled greens, hints of yellow and washout reds. Not long after chairs we were being asked for tables and although we hunted high a low for original vintages tables, we found a few, but not enough to meet demand. We found it was easy to come across traditional 6ft x 2ft 6in trestle tables and so we decided to go large! Our Gigantes trestle tables, made from reclaimed wood, were born and to be honest the laughing stock of other event suppliers who said we’d cripple our delivery teams who had to load and carry the these large and heavy tables!
The table started with a simple A-frame leg, but we soon realised that this leg posed leg-room issue, and so a new tripod leg style was designed. One of the greatest assets of our tables was their large size. Far from being a hinderance, as many first thought, they proved perfect for less formal dining options, allowing for large platters of food to be shared at the table and for opulent use of florals and centrepieces without overbearing the place settings. The tables could be used indoors or outdoors and they blended in to suit any style of event – contemporary or traditional. Immediately the word got out and the pared-back, easy appeal of these tables took them to events across the country and overseas.
The Beauty of Reclaimed Wood Tables
By making our tables from previously used timber we felt that we were helping to reduce the effect that we have on the environment. As well as the aesthetic appeal of our Gigantes trestle tables they provided the eco-friendly choice to our clients who desired a beautiful and practical table without having a harmful impact on the planet. Reclaimed wood is usually much older than the wood used in new furniture that has been mostly been made of wood from young trees. This makes the wood much stronger and less prone to cracking and chipping, so they were perfect for event furniture, where the rigours of hire can very quickly have a detrimental effect on the attractiveness of a piece of furniture.
Choosing Your Event Tables
There’s far more to choosing the right dining table than meets the eye. Dining tables are often central to an event, it’s where we dine, host and socialise and your tables can become a statement piece in themselves. Think about the visual you want to create. Our wooden table options provide a simple, natural base and can be styled to provide a rustic or contemporary look. We have 3 long dining table style to choose from, our Gigantes trestle tables, in plain wood, as popular as ever, a beautiful whitewashed version and our stunning Allegra refectory dining tables for a more sophisticated appeal. Choose a dining table that’s tailored to your dining style is another consideration. Are you planning to have a feasting style menu, using large food platters or a more formal meal served to the table? Our large tables suit both options but you will want to consider your venue space. If your venue or marquee company can provide you with room dimensions, you can begin thinking about you floor plan and working out logistics like, can your waiting staff move easily around the tables and can your guests get in and out of their seat with ease? If you need help figuring our table layouts and spacing, our general rule of thumb is to allow at least 1.5m between tables where chairs are back to back and and least 1m space around the table ends, so guests and staff can moved around easily.
Once your logistics have been considered, you’ll probably start looking at your chair options, and that’s another story! If you need help with your table plans and styling, do get in touch. We are here to help.
